I’ve been working with Build A School In Kenya (BASIK) for nearly two years now and in this time the charity has gone from strength to strength. For a family run charity they have achieved a massive amount for the children and schools that they support in Kenya and are just about to breach £7000 total funds raised. Since the last site was built BASIK has managed to build several new school buildings, purchase a scooter for the use of the school staff, bought books and teaching resources and most recently they have started a campaign to raise money by sponsoring children so that they may receive an education.
BASIK has always relied on their website as a means of communicating their events and news to people that have an affiliation with the charity. As they have grown, so have their needs for communication and so recently the decision was made to overhaul the website, including implementing a brand new content management system.
When researching the primary uses of the site it appeared that by far the majority of users were coming to check on the event listings, read the latest news and see the current total funds raised. Taking this into account, the site was designed so that this information was the first thing that you are greeted with. All the information about why the charity was setup and who is involved is still there, but it was decided that as this information wasn’t relevant to repeat visitors, less importance was placed in it’s positioning.
The site has now stepped away from the massively bright colour scheme and uses the logo in a much more subtle way, giving a professional yet approachable feel again reflecting the growth and improvement that BASIK has achieved.
The new CMS makes it easy for the charity to expand, with very straightforward ways to add new projects, children to be sponsored, events, news and of course the latest total for funds raised. By reducing the difficulty that is involved when updating the site we hope to encourage greater use and repeat visits as there should always be something new to read about.
BASIK has plans to roll out several new features soon and I’m in the thick of it designing certificates, promotional material and charity stationery. Here’s to another successful couple of years!

Good Post. Thanks for sharing.
